Favourite records of 2017 [alphabetical by artist/surname, with occasional pseud’s-corner type comments!]

===
Bibio - Phantom Brickworks [Warp]
The tracks on Bibio’s enjoyably varied previous album, “A Mineral Love”, bring to mind everyone from Simon and Garfunkel to Shalamar. This new one is an entirely instrumental ambient soundscape, and is hauntingly beautiful; piano keys buried like unbroken bricks in sonic rubble.
===
Motorpsycho - Begynnelser [Rune Grammophon]
Soundtrack to a Nordic play - inventively packaged double 10”, CD & DVD - all in a hardback book.
===
The Orchids - Who Needs Tomorrow (re-issue compilation + demos & rarities) [Cherry Red]
Superb retrospective compilation on CD1, and some great demo versions and rarities on CD2.
===
Mikael Tariverdiev - Olga Sergeevna (soundtrack re-issue) [Earth]
I have had this music in digital form for some time, but this double vinyl re-issue is both welcome and great. Sounds wonderful, with gorgeous packaging - right down to the postcard with the download code on the back - the front of which combines a photo of a water-skiing Tariverdiev with great graphic design.
===
Mikael Tariverdiev - Irony of Fate (soundtrack re-issue) [Earth]
“Snow Over Leningrad” is one of wintriest instrumentals ever made.

Notable mentions for 2017 [alphabetical by artist, with occasional pseud’s-corner type comments!]
===
Durutti Column - Domo Arigato v 2.0 [Factory Benelux]
Nice expanded re-issue either on several CDs [with not one but two Japanese performances] and a DVD in a box, or a double-vinyl LP, with a replica Japanese 7” single also included.
===
Gentleman Losers - Permanently Midnight [Grainy]
Seven years since the last one. As if the sound-waves are encrusted in Scandinavian lichen.
===
Spinning Coin - Permo [Geographic]
A guitar pop record: good melodies and chord-changes on many songs. Recorded in Glasgow & Helmsdale and available on a big slab of green vinyl.
===
Toán - histós lusis [Eilean]
Limited CD pressing with innovative packaging. Tracks made by cutting up classical vinyl snippets into an audio collage, garnished with a few real instruments and field recordings.
